I may have a job coming in with this set up. What''s the prblem with the H4N that causes this? What's the fix?

Just be careful with this and other methods because just because you can later line up the audio of the camera with the audio of the H4N, does NOT mean that your video and audio are in sync.
Take a moment to do a couple of tests. Shoot yourself with your 5DMII (or whatever) and just clap in front of your face. Now import it and see if the audio from the camera ... frame by frame ... matches the audio. It's probably off.
If it's not, try shooting a long clip with some moving, complicated background or motion (like a five minute wide shot of a tree with leaves) clapping at the front and the end. Import. check the sync of both claps frame for frame. Still in sync?
Then try your example of feeding through an H4N. Clap front and back on a longer clip. Import and see if the audio and VIDEO are actually in sync.
