The audio waveforms are very accurate as far as position in time compared to where the audio actually is, compared to FCP7 where you can not count on the waveforms to accurately position a cut, but the size of the waveform has no relation to volume or loudness. To me, this is a GOOD thing. You can actually use option-command L and K to enLarge and shrinK the size of the waveform inside the track. command-k and l shrinK and enLarge the tracks themselves.
If you're seeing a "square" waveform, it's because the volume on import was REALLY LOUD. Use the option-command (or alt-command on PC) trick to see the actual shapes and hits of the waveform.
This is the way it's been for at least a decade. Probably more.

If I look at the waveform, in my standard(normal timeline view), (2 or 3 V trks and 4 A trks not to tiny, but not huge, I see basically a square wave. Open the same file in a "real" audio program, ie Audition, Sound Track Pro, waveform looks good. If I take the Avid timeline audio track and Command K it till it's almost full screen, then I see what looks like a normal waveform. Open the same file in DS and the waveform height seems relative to track height.
