Basically, yes, this works. You just have to watch out for a few things.

It should really be that simple. If there are any audio clips in the
original that aren't part of EX clips (music tracks, VO, etc.), you should
IMPORT those into MC (instead of AMA). Then compare those clips to the
offline clips that came in through AAF. Most of the time FCP will assign a
time code that is different from MC, so modify the timecodes to match,
modify tape names if there were any, and relink. It all works, I've done
this a bunch of times.
If you can't get something to relink in MC, it is likely mismatched time
code (start TC or DF/NDF), mismatched tape name, or just the wrong clip.
You can always modify these things and force relink, but try to link as
much as you can without modifying first. Also, parse through the HTML file
that Duck makes with the AAF. This will show you where any potential
discrepancies (such as mismatched frame rates) occur and that heads up can
give you enough information to figure out why something isn't relinking in
MC.
