(I had a bunch of Media Composers starting in 1993, both for in-house
work and to rent out.) Actually this process was trivial at the time.
Whenever an Avid would get wonky, we'd back up the projects, then
re-format the internal drive. Then we'd boot off an external drive
(configured as a backup, pre-loaded with the O/S, Avid, etc.) and
clone it back onto the internal drive. The whole process took about 5
minutes to initiate, another 10 minutes of copying, and things were
back to normal. Heck, if an editor didn't have 15 minutes, we'd just
re-boot off the external drive and run off of that until the end of
the day.
