A good question that has been asked many times in the past. I guess it takes a certain political will and/or researchers to put a convincing case.
Unfortunately just about all of the UK based research comes from the same man who sells the kit, such as this:

I think there's little doubt that his research is valid, it's just a shame that he's the only guy making the kit to test for it.
