[Avid-L2] Re: Machine Room Best Practices

Most Sony VTRs have an RS-422 in and an RS-422 out or in/out IIRC. There was a way of daisy chaining 1 inch machines to gang roll. I never had occasion to set up the feature but I'm pretty sure it worked for at least rolling playbacks not sure about multi records.

It's a real shame as I really found that part of the job (I'm an assistant, not an editor - although i guess the term is tech op although i actually never know how to describe my job to people) to be one of the most satisfying. It doesn't feel like you're working in "Tech" when you can't push big coloured buttons and plumb cables in to machines, it's all just turning in to file-nannying. I've met guys who've been working a couple of years and don't know how to stripe a tape. I guess this happens every time new technology surplants old technology but I liked the old technology better. I felt like i was always learning something about those machines, I've yet to learn a new way to copy files from A to B.
