I have a similar problem with YouTube sometimes... esp on 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.7. Firefox is going kinda crazy with updates these days. On 10.6.8, Google's Chrome browser seems to work pretty reliably with YouTube.

Don't know if that'll solve your problem. But Chrome's not so bad anyway...
