On a series I recently worked on they had similar problems with ama links. The Cannon 5D footage worked pretty well but the go pro footage would not mount through ama volume and the solution was what you found. The go pro footage had to be linked by ama file not volume. I don't know what causes the issue but that's what the AEs did to get the footage in for online.
