If your phone does Wifi - and I am sure it does - JiWire allows you to type in a place name and search for local free wifi spots among the 25,000 or so on its database. It's also worth checking Free Hotspot, and Hotspot Locations. In addition don't forget about Fon; in the UK BT are a big provider of home wifi and all their hubs come with Fon turned on. So, my home router has most of the bandwidth for me behind a WPA password but it dishes out a little bit to the other BT Fon subscribers out there to use for free if they are BT Wifi customers.
So, if you want to you could become a Wifi customer and save data that way. http://www.btwifi.com/

Greg,
Take into account that a UK provider will also charge hefty rates if you use that phone in another European country. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a pan-European phone or data plan. There are world SIMs, but they're not cheap when it comes to data.
