An interim feature that would alleviate the issue would be an option to have
waveforms automatically turn off when you change the zoom level and/or
position of the timeline. I find I get in trouble when I'm zoomed in working
with waveforms turned on and then forget to toggle them off before I zoom
out to show the entire sequence.
