RE: [Avid-L2] Re: Can't Modify Source on AMA clips prior to transcode and NOW: How does Avid AMA link to QT without TC?

There's definitely no harm in adding a tape name before consolidating, it just saves you having to add it after all the clips are transcoded/consolidated. If you're leaving a batch over night then this means that you don't have to remember to do it in the morning or even worse, tell someone else to remember to do it in the morning. On our version 4's I found that in order to relink we HAD to have a tape number. On the newer versions I've worked on, it seems unnecessary but you need a way to trace the bins back to their original location and a tape number is a nice way to do it. Call the imported clips the same as the AMA bin and you will always know which bins you need to open. Tape name is just one of the columns you can use to do this, disk label works too, it's just good to have as much detail about where the files have come from in case of problems later on.

Recently I conformed a show which was mostly Canon XF footage but there was some 5D footage too which had been AMA'd in. Opening the AMA bin relinked that too and I'm curious because I'm used to QTs not relinking correctly because they don't have TC, can anyone explain why that's happening now? Normally I would use something like Metacheater to add TC from the THM files. This hadn't happened on the show i was working on so how is the Avid relinking to the QT media without having timecode? I can see how it might be able to get the right clip, but how does it know where to start the clip in the timeline if it has no TC reference? Pardon my ignorance but I've not been working on the new versions too much.

There seems to be something in the metadata structure that "bakes in" the reel name if you add it before consolidating. I've also seen times when I could not add a reel name until I consolidated the clip. It's like if you can add the name before consolidation/transcode the reel name data gets put into the file header information or some place like that. If you add it later it's more like the Avid project is tracking that metadata and it's not an integral part of the actual media .mxf file. I may be wrong on this but that's how it seems to behave. From my limited FCP dealings it's kinda like how the FCP project would contain the info for some or all of the clips metadata stuff but the actual QT .mov didn't have that data as part of it's file header or where ever that data could be stored.

Most people find that giving the clips a tape name that matches the bin name is the quickest way to do this and makes it easy to duplicate the tape naming. Whether it's necessary I don't know but I'm of the mind set that anything you can do to add stability to the relinking process is a good thing. Some have intimated that there are negative side effects to adding the tape name. I know there are when dealing with standard Avid imports but in my limited use of ama the reel names have helped the process even with Red footage. YMMV

That, in addition to the fact that I've relinked (admittedly) simple sequences without setting a tape name makes me think (hope) the step is unnecessary.
