[Avid-L2] Re: Can't Modify Source on AMA clips prior to transcode

Thanks, all, for your prompt and helpful replies. I love the L2!

I'm going to skip the Modify Source step, as it sounds both unnecessary and perhaps even inadvisable. My limited tests — transcoding the AMA clips, editing with .new clips, then relinking to AMA originals — seem to have worked fine with all the formats, even Canon clips that all began with 0 timecode.

My "project" is actually advising a group of 20 student filmmakers on their Avid workflow. So I'd like to make the workflow as robust as possible, but to avoid unnecessary or confusing steps, because they're new to Avid.

On that front — I was going to advise students to create a custom "Original Name" column reflecting the names of the original AMA clips, in case it helps with relinking. Is this unnecessary? Outdated technique? I know that Avid preserves metadata with similar information automatically, but nothing that's exactly the clip name.

Would love your thoughts on whether to drop this step from the workflow document, which is already 6 pages long...

Cheers!
-Mike

Tried using QT change to alter the speed but it didn't work and QT change prompted that the speed change was not recognized by some NLEs. Cinema Tools was not an option because it was not an I frame codec. Does anybody know of an app that will allow you to alter the .mov frame rate in a manner Avid will recognize. Does Clip Wrap do that? Sounds like you are having a similar issue because of the way DVCPro HD records 59.94 frames with pull down so even though there are only 23.976 unique frames Avid sees all 60 when it comes to adding a tape name and rejects it. Perhaps you could open a matching project 720/60 and modify the tape name in that then open that bin in your 23.98 project. Just a thought.
