[Avid-L2] Re: Can't Modify Source on AMA clips prior to transcode

There seems to be something in the metadata structure that "bakes in" the reel name if you add it before consolidating. I've also seen times when I could not add a reel name until I consolidated the clip. It's like if you can add the name before consolidation/transcode the reel name data gets put into the file header information or some place like that. If you add it later it's more like the Avid project is tracking that metadata and it's not an integral part of the actual media .mxf file. I may be wrong on this but that's how it seems to behave. From my limited FCP dealings it's kinda like how the FCP project would contain the info for some or all of the clips metadata stuff but the actual QT .mov didn't have that data as part of it's file header or where ever that data could be stored.

Most people find that giving the clips a tape name that matches the bin name is the quickest way to do this and makes it easy to duplicate the tape naming. Whether it's necessary I don't know but I'm of the mind set that anything you can do to add stability to the relinking process is a good thing. Some have intimated that there are negative side effects to adding the tape name. I know there are when dealing with standard Avid imports but in my limited use of ama the reel names have helped the process even with Red footage. YMMV

That, in addition to the fact that I've relinked (admittedly) simple sequences without setting a tape name makes me think (hope) the step is unnecessary.
