RE: [Avid-L2] Loudness Plugin

This is two separate functions - one for creating loudness, and one for
metering it. Any compressor will create loudness- not sure which RTAS
compressors will work in Media Composer - but in protools we use Isotope
and Waves, (both L2 and L3) which give amazing results for loudness and
clarity.

For metering, Dolby makes a plugin called 'media meter' that we use on
every program and promo. It's really changed the sound of promos and
trailers. Again, Protools, not sure about Media Composer. Since it's a
real-time metering system that's both cumulative and instant, I'm not
sure how you'd use it in Media Composer. Other companies are also
making meters now - Waves WLM. I think Minetonka (sp?) wrote one also.

The larger problem is that the distributor is probably not requiring the
commercials to adhere to the CALM act, but you'll probably have to. Or,
even in the case of some channels carried on DirecTV, the engineering is
clearly screwed up - and the commercials are CLEARLY at a different
level when inserted into the programming. Nothing you can do about
that.

I deliver a show weekly to the CBS PitchBlue system and they
insert the commercials. Lately I have been hearing from some of the
affiliates that there is a substantial difference between the loudness
levels of the show and the commercials. Has anyone here had any
experience with loudness plugings for Avid? I'm currently on Mac based
Media Composer 5.5.3 but will be running Symphony 6 in the future.
Thanks in advance for your valued and trusted opinions.
