Re: [Avid-L2] DNxHD from Sony F3 Camera

Thanks to everyone that replied in this thread. It was helpful.
For anyone that's following along, here's what happened (#5 may be of the most interest):

1 -
DP recorded XDCAM files to the onboard SxS card (35Mb/sec). He also used an external device (sorry that I forget which one... it had "pix" in the name I believe). The "pix" device saved the files in the DNxHD 220x codec. I'm not sure whether it recorded the video as it came in and did this, or if it was converting the 35Mb files (though see #5).

2 -
The DP believed (and told me) that the converted files would be .mxf. They were not. They were .mov files in the DNxHD codec.

3 -
There was a technical problem with the "pix" converter device during the shoot and not all the footage was recorded/converted to it. However, all the footage was on the SxS card of course.

4 -
I easily AMA'd to both the XDCAM and .mov files.

5 -
Interestingly... strangely... disconcertingly (to me, anyway), when I compared the durations and the TC of the XDCAM files with the .mov files, both were very different. I found this odd. My expectation was that both would be the same. That they were different leads me to deduce that the "pix" device was recording, rather than converting.

6 -
In the end, I felt more comfortable using the XDCAM footage as I was not missing anything in that format.

7 -
I tested Consolidating: it worked great and was fast (it's a rewrap). However, I wanted the footage in the same codec as everything else and I didn't want to have the motion adapter on there, so I Transcoded to DNxHD 220x. This didn't take that long either.

8 -
I am now happily editing away.

9 -
The end.

And that's your bedtime story for today boys and girls.

Cheers,

B
