I am trying to put together a usable workflow for taking film scan files (which are 3296 x 2472 12-bit Cineform files) and tweaking them in FCP-X.
Right now I am creating proxy files from the original scan files (which takes a long time, and may be a bad idea) that are 1920 x 1080.
I add cuts where I need to change grading. I use Color Adjustment and the somewhat odd Color Board and am able to get a reasonable result most of the time.
However, since the Color Adjustment is not an effect, but an event property (if that's the right term) it can't be keyframed. Often in film material you need to do what film timers used to call a "go-to" which is a mid-shot correction. I can do this brute-force -- a change at a cut -- but what I need is the ability to dissolve between two different settings over a variable length of time -- from a few frames to a second or more.
My 1990 DaVinci Classic let me easily dissolve between two settings. When I used a Meridien Symphony I would just add a cut and do a dissolve between the two different clips of the same shot. A little messy but workable.
When I try to do this in FCP-X (which I am admittedly very new to) I can never get the dissolve to work -- the shots do not remain in sync during the dissolve!
I searched for a keyframable effect for color correction but only found a lot of silly presets that had limited parameters to adjust. Am I missing something here?
Obviously I should be using something like DaVinci Resolve here, or Speedgrade, or something else. But there are some things about FCP-X that might make it useful, though some of the interface stuff is insane. (In trim, why can't you just drag the head or tail marker, rather than counter-intuitively slide the film strip in relation to it?)
Any ideas?
I am also experimenting with Premiere Pro CS6, which has some virtues.
