On Macs you have the app Screen Sharing at this path (normally not exposed to the user): /System/Library/CoreServices/Screen\ Sharing.app
I believe that's what's used by Remote Desktop, but this way, it's also accessible without that. If the video doesn't come across, then you could simply run a video cable from next door, and look at the video on your broadcast monitor. Not sure about the sound, but you could also run an audio cable...
