I've had a dongle for my freelance work since Avid Xpress 3.5, and it works wonderfully. When I started my latest full-time position, I got them to buy their own copy that was activation-based, and getting it to work turned into a day-long affair. I really don't look forward to the time when I'll inevitably need to transfer it in a pinch...
I'm sure many people have had good experiences, but that was not a fun day to be the guy that convinced them to switch from Premiere.
