I still am very fond of Cinemacraft, but it will set you back some 1K
(cheap, i've paid over 2K back in the days).
But, only reason to use a very expensive encoder is if you want really low
bitrates.
If you stay over about 5000 the differences are very hard to spot, unless
you have a really lousy encoder.
(I had to do commercial DVD's with a huge amount of difficult content, so i
needed the best of the best, and there were not many alternatives back then)
IOW, there is open source that will do what you want, for free...
