We found the KiPro to be quite unreliable in studio use (it was a backup
recorder to our main EditShare GeeVS system). It's now sitting in a box of
"spare bits" and we're using a Atomos Samurai I believe.
I'm currently looking at the HyperDeck Studio also, but sort of for the
opposite reason - I currently only have to make tapes for a couple of
purposes, it's annoying and it takes up a lot of suite time. I am already
exporting Same-as-Source Quicktime files of the finished and mixed
episodes, for other purposes so I'm hoping I can use the HyperDeck studio
to make those usable in a tape workflow. Either getting client to buy one
and just dispatching SSDs to them, or using it in the tape rack as a
playback source for straight dubbing.
I spoke to Blackmagic this morning and they say it should be suitable for
that, so my next step is to test it.
As for recording - when looking at replacements for the KiPro we looked at
the HyperDeck Studio but the issue for us was the SSDs - we shoot 4-5 hours
a day in studio and need to hold backups for at least a couple of weeks.
The cost of SSDs to meet that demand was way too much, even with DNxHD
recording. The Samurai will recoding on spinning disks, so we can use
inexpensive hard drives.
