Subject: [Avid-L2] Tapeless Reality Check - clip names "00000".
So…
This largish shop I just started working at shot this series on the Sony FS-100. Apparently this is only reason I get to work on MC 6.
They've told me that the import process - AMA style - doesn't allow them to rename the clips, and because we're doing an online / offline process, I can't rename the clips or the links to the original media will break.
But I've got 10 interviews, and the clip names for them are all the same. So whether it's Mr. Big Shot or Mother of Crime Victim speaking, my timeline just says "00000", "00001", etc. This is crazy to me; somehow we've lost something that's been in NLEs pretty much since day 1. That broll shot covering the cut? "00000".
So my first question is this: does it really have to be this way? Is there not some step they just skipped where they get a chance to rationalize the file names between camera card and hard drive?
And the second question is more practical; is there anything I can do to make my edit less hair-pully-outey? I saw that now I've got the option to display comments in the timeline, but that seems to line up with the comments you add via the record monitor which were intended to send a note to the online editor in the EDL, not the comments field which you get in the script bin view (I think that's what it's called). Any ideas? At this point I've just turned the text off and turned the frame view on and I'm pretending I'm sitting at a Steenbeck.
Thanks very much, gang.
