I don't think that information about naming the clips INSIDE AVID is correct. The smartest thing to do is to do a very short test. You could accomplish it in 30 minutes or less. AMA a few short clips. Change the names. Take the drive off-line. Move the clips somewhere else and try to relink to your renamed clips.
I think Oliver Peters has outlined a pretty good workflow for this in one of his blogs.
