We have to seek higher ground, and look for work in new places. We also have to acquire new skills we didn't need before. If I apply to a job on Craigslist, they want me to know the CS5 Suite,
be able to color correct in Color, take their audio in an out of ProTools, and master their DVDs. Oh, and it would be helpful if I could shoot, produce, and write too. Basically, they want a kid from
some program who's done a little of all of this, but don't care that the kid doesn't do any of it well, or expertly shall we say. But even adding a couple of these skills makes me more marketable.

Well here's one company taking advantage of that phenomena. Definitely worth
watching if you're not up on the latest in Catvertising (or if you just want to
watch a rather clever video)

Maybe. Something like that happened before with typesetters, audio guys, and
hell...newspapers and magazines. In all those fields, skilled practitioners were
able to leave their discipline's equivalent of a post house and strike out on
their own...without big leases to service. At least for a while.
But I know lots of good typographers-cum-designers, journalists, photographers,
text and picture editors and others who have less work than they once did.
"Good" as in "pay the mortgage and keep clients/bosses/audiences very
satisfied."
Maybe it's just the current economy, or maybe the world today doesn't need as
many well-paid people in these fields as before.
