Well, I think while avoiding the slate may help extend the life span of the 5D's sensor, it's probably shortening mine!
I'm glad at least that the life expectancy issue with the white balance button is keeping you in clover. ;-)

Shirley perhaps you are unaware of a little known deficiency with the 5D's
sensor. The jarring nature of a slate clap actually reduces the life span of
the chip. So those "In the Know" take every opportunity to avoid shooting the
slate. ;-) There is a similar shortening of camera life expectancy when using
the White Balance button. At least that's the only way I can explain all the
