I contacted Magic Bullet and provided them with those exact examples. They indicated they had a lens shift type effect -- but it couldn't achieve those results.
And, I've experimented with Animatte -- but could not simulate a smooth and gradual focus transition from sharp to blur. Maybe it's me -- but Animatte's toolset does not seem to offer the range that would be required to achieve that visual effect.
