I don't know about the US but in the UK unions certainly have had value historically - much of which we still benefit from today: Lunch and rest breaks, holiday pay, maternity/paternity pay, sickness & unemployment benefit, the 8 hour day, overtime, health and safety legislation and years of pay bargaining to get where we are now (which is pretty much to have lost most of the above...).

Back in 1834 you'd be sent to Australia for being a Union member. Now you may have to go to Australia to find one.
