Regardless of whether your stance is pro or con, unions have little value to the production and post freelancers outside of the major metro areas, because they simply don't result in work. I'm in Florida and most of the IATSE film crew folks I know work more non-union than union gigs simply out of self preservation. I don't think many of them see their membership as a huge benefit, but they belong in order to keep getting calls on the union feature films that come through the south east. Now in LA or NY, it's a vastly different story, but mainly applicable in film and TV show post, not corporate or commercial.
