I think there are several deciding factors in this decision for anyone:

1. Do you need to work with tape I/O?
2. Is your project mix largely based on TV shows?
3. Do you have to collaborate with other editors or vendors?
4. Do you use a workflow that requires interop between applications?
5. What tools does your freelance pool know?
6. Does your system need to work with 3rd party hardware and/or storage?
7. Do you have margin for down time?

I think in Walter's case, the answers were all largely best served by Avid. Finishing TV shows in a collaborative environment on deadline is something that Avid excels in, so the exercise that he went through is quite useful.
