[Avid-L2] DVD Studio Pro Sync Problems

Forgive the crossposting.

I am still dealing with a bizarre problem that should be simple to fix.

I have a Digibeta master of a film that has a sync error about 1 hour into the film. It only affects the second of three reels of the film. It is easily fixed by dropping a couple of frames of audio, but to keep reel three in sync a couple of frames of audio need to be added at the start of that reel.

Theoretically, easy as pie.

Here's the problem. This was assembled on my old Meridien Symphony, and one of the drives in the raid died. Redigitize? Sold my Digibeta deck when they were still of value. Also, getting up to speed on that Avid might not be so easy!

I do have a DVD that was done on a Sonic system that is fine except for the sync problem. I would rather not mess with the picture compression.

I got good advice here about demuxing the files with MPEG Streamclip. That worked.

I could make a copy of the picture file in DV Codec and an AIFF of the stereo track and, in FCP, fix the sync, save the new audio file, and then convert it to AC3 or MP2. No problems.

I realized I still had DVD Studio Pro 4.21, so loaded the files (original but demuxed picture and the fixed track, as AC3 or MP2.

I can sync it up and it is perfect when played in DVD Studio Pro. Might require an offset of the audio track to get into sync, but once there it is fine. Lock them up. Build and Burn. Many times.

No matter what I do, the audio is not in sync with the picture -- it is always several frames off, anywhere in the film.

I try trimming outside DVDSP, so no offset is needed, but still the sync is off. I have a pile of DVDs that are NG. At least they are cheap now!

Any suggestions -- including other programs -- that I might use to solve this problem? Toast? Anything?

Thanks,

Jeff "also dealing with a dll that won't load on a W7 machine... give me my Steenbeck any day!" Kreines
