I'm on 5.5.3 and 10.6.8.

According to the version matrix (
http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=267087&Hilite=version+matrix+Composer+Version+Matrix),
5.5.2 is not supported for 10.6.8. I'd deauthorize/uninstall 5.5.2, upgrade
the OS (via combo installer) and then install 5.5.3.

Should not be a need to worry about serial, provided you deauthorize first.
