M stands for metadata and once selected will adjust picture/levels on the REDCineX side to match what the crew had set on the camera.

"use restricted SMPTE range" did the trick - brought blacks up to where there should normally be and now i know where my mids are, thank god. btw, what does the "M" button do? i am still familiarizing myself with all of redcine's many options. is there a comprehensive manual anywhere? what i found was little more than an info sheet.
