All real-time/no-rendering claims by anyone are bogus. It's completely dependent on the effect and complexity of the effect, since this is all now software based. FCP X doesn't render in the background. It renders during idle time. Big difference.
In any case, on most of these systems, simple effects will play without rendering, but multiple effects or complex effects cause playback to stutter and, therefore, you need to render just to keep your editing flow going.
