I've asked this before but I'm trying to sort out what levels actually get to the ProRes HQ file. My workflow is to export a QT Ref from Mac SNDX 4.0.5 with 4 discrete channels of audio. I have tested setting the export to 709 and RGB and then Using QT Pro to export the ProResHQ. When I take both files and ama link to them on my mcsoft V6 both levels of color bars are correct and the gfx/video level parameter is set to do not modify levels. If I import the QT to prores levels remain correct. If I transcode to dnx 145 on import that's where I see the levels change. When I import the ProRes HQ file that was made from the Avid 709 exported QT Ref and I set the Avid Import setting to 709 the video is hot like a typical RGB source. If I import the same movie as RGB the levels are close but not perfect, this is nothing new. I'm guessing it's QT that is interpreting some metadata that is causing the level changes. Am I wrong to think that the
ama link to the files set to not modify levels is showing the actual video essence levels? Both 709 and RGB exported from Avid as QT ref then exported to ProResHQ from QT Pro show up as identical and correct in level in Avid. Since Avid works internally 16-235 I would think this means the video essence is 16-235. It's very hard to get a true look at the actual video level but should I consider the ama link to be the best path for QC level? If only there was a device that would take my show's signal and put it on some media that could be played back and QC'd on an external scope in an easy manner? Oh wait that would be a tape machine like the one I just used to output this show that now I'm trying to get on file. Unfortunately I don't have access to an FCP rig with a video card because then I would just play out my sequence or capture the tape I already made.
