[Avid-L2] MC6 Panning Information

Doug Hansel was kind enough to speak with me the other day and
at the end of our conversation he said he'd put something together to help illuminate things.
I'm passing this along from him:

As promised, here's a blurb on a few things that have come up in posts recently including the Default pan issue. Feel free to post this anywhere you like if it helps editors understand how things are supposed to work.
Thanks,
Doug
---------------------
Default Pan:
Some editors have been confused by changes around mono tracks and default behaviors in the Audio settings.
It's important to note that the Default Pan setting (audio settings) is telling the system that mono tracks default to MID (preferred) or Alternating L/R for odd/even tracks (legacy) The wording in the settings dialog is confusing, and there is a bug to change the default pan setting to read "Default pan for mono tracks"… Choices then become "Alternating L/R" and "Centered"

Therefore, when an editor option/alt clicks the pan knob in the audio mixer it tells the system to set the pan to the default. That default will vary based on the default pan setting. (Default pan for A1 with default set to Alternating L/R = hard left)
The default setting, since stereo tracks where introduced In v5, was to have any mono tracks pan to the center.

Something unique to v5 was that the new stereo tracks only had a single pan knob for panning stereo channels. With only one knob to control stereo pan, the MID point of a stereo panner defaulted to a hard left/right and turning the pan knob would add more or less signal from L or R until both tracks were summed out of a hard single output. This approach was less flexible than having two dedicated pan pots as Pro Tools uses, so it was decided in v6 to use two pan pots for stereo tracks for maximum flexibility and interoperability with Pro Tools.

Turning the knob:
I've heard that some editors struggle with getting the Pan pots to "turn" as it were, and for people not used to a knob interface it may be worth nothing how they work with the mouse.
If you want to "turn" a knob, you click on hit and either move up/down vertically, or left/right horizontally. This is how the mouse is expected to move. Attempting to turn the knob physically will yield the poorest results.

Stereo Tracks:
Many editors are now using stereo tracks and enjoying the simplicity and real estate savings, however it appear that some folks still struggle with the concept, may not having had time to read the manual and understand how they work. Using a stereo track simply requires telling the master clip that there are stereo audio channels present. This is a flag that is set during ingest or modify. For example, If you know that you are bringing a bunch of clips and they all have stereo audio on channel 1 and 2, you can set the import settings>audio tab> multichannel audio setting to flag all A1A2 to have a stereo flag. Obviously you can do this with the capture tool as well. However, it's easy to forget to do this, so many folks use the modify command to bulk select all the clips in a bin and set the stereo flag that way (modify>Set multichannel audio). What's most important to note is that you can easily remove the flag at anytime and edit the tracks as mono too. You just won't be able to edit them into a stereo track.

Thanks,
Doug
