G-Drive minis should be fine - make two copies if it's practical, and you're paranoid, split them up between staff on return. MAXX digital has a similar small drive if you're not a G-drive fan- we use both/either, depending on who's cheaper on any given day.

I've never had any trouble carrying an external drive in my laptop bag through the airport. I don't even take them out of the bag when it goes through the scanner- even though you have to take out the laptop.
