You can still purchase avid dongles ($200 or there abouts) and have the license converted to a dongle updates.
Dongles will run old versions serials not. If you upgrade a serial you can run the old or the new but not both but if it's a brand new serial in will only run that version.
Basically a serial comes as a system ID and the activation serial number and that serial number is version specific.
I have some system IDs with 3 different activation IDs where they've been updated over the years.
Personally I'd pay the extra for the hardware dongle.
I have 2 V 4 commercial dongles with script Sync that I'll be selling off soon.
The upgrade cost to V6 plus the Avid transfer fee still makes them worth a few bob!
