This is awesome info, thanks. I got the assist with embedded reel numbers set but then found I was rendering out to 30fps not 29.97. Once I got that I could get a relink. The other thing I had an issue with was the source timecode drop vs. non drop. I had a simple straight cut sequence with 4 clips from 3 reels. One of the reels was non drop and the other 2 were drop frame. It seems the source time codes on the rendered out media is controlled by the timeline conform option. When I checked the drop frame box all the rendered source clips were drop frame and when I unchecked it the clips were all non drop. I had to modify the wrong timecode clips in avid and then reassign the tape name back to the proper reel name without the .ndf or .df suffix avid adds when modifying the time code on clips.
Is there a way to export an aaf out of Resolve Lite? I see ale but no AAF. I'm just scratching the surface of Resolve so I have a lot to learn but it sure looks fun. I just have to find a reliable way to round trip which still sounds too problematic for the factory style onlines I have to crank through. I think I'm going to take a good look at trying to output an entire sequence as one file and use the edl method to break it up. I know this isn't as elegant but for the time being that would mimic the traditional tape to tape color correction workflow and avoid a lot of the hassles of manually resyncing things. Pretty amazing to be sitting at home on a MBP with my new Artist color panel and getting to learn the basics of a Davinci workflow. Interesting times.
