Re: [Avid-L2] XDCAM HD workflow check

all is right, transcode times are doable, especially if you let it grind
trough the night.
Since Avid is smart, the original folder structure isn't even needed, as all
the metadata (read, timecode, there is not much more) also lives inside the
MXF.
But it can't hurt either.
Now, BE AFRAID of the FAM mode on some decks (U1)
This can make the disk mount as if sound and video are seperate files. YOU
DO NOT WANT THIS if you copy the contents of a disc to a HD.
(as it is 'fake', the driver demuxes the files on the fly)
120 or 185 is hard to decide. Since your original is probably 50 Mbits LONG
GOP, and 120 is I ONLY, you might loose a bit.
For me, i don't care, i use 120. For you, just check by eye (is there still
a 'difference matte' plugin for Avid? always nice to see if it is solid
black or not...)

And, last but not least, i ALWAYS assign a Reel name to the footage, besides
a disk number. May save your butt if the shit hits the fan.
(and it aint that much work...)

And export to file (in this case XDcam MXF @ 50 Mbits is pretty standard if
you are aiming for broadcast.

Subject: [Avid-L2] XDCAM HD workflow check

List,

Looking for feedback on an XDCAM HD workflow for a 50-minute show, as I've
mostly dealt with 35mm, Red and Alexa over the last few years.

My plan:

- receive XDCAM HD disks from production
- copy contents of XDCAM HD disks to a hard disk (preserving the folder
structure of the disk), send back the originals for archiving
- AMA-link to the copies on the hard disk
- transcode the AMA-linked clips to DNxHD 120 or 185 for editing (this is
25p or 50i)
- edit away
- export to color correction and sound post
- marry graded picture and mixed sound, add captions / graphics after color
grading
- playout to tape or export to file (yet to hear delivery requirements, I'm
betting Op1A MXF export is required)

The reason for the transcode is that DNx will play much nicer with the
system (Symph v6 /w Nitris DX on XW8600) than the native MPEG files, right?
Also, transcoded media will let me do Same-As-Source exports in-between and
make for faster rendering, right?

120 should be high enough when the source is MPEG50 or lower, right?

Anyone have a clue what transcode times I'd be looking at?

Many thanks,

J.
