Re: [Avid-L2] Blackmagic buys Teranex

The nice thing about hardware when it comes to this type of thing is:

1) because everything has to go in and out via SDI, that piece of the puzzle is essentially removed. Of course you still have to know if its full range vs SMPTE, etc. etc, but there are fewer options than with file based workflow. SDI becomes a sort of mandatory highly standardized intermediate codec.

2) When people design hardware they actually test it before putting it into production since it's really hard to change except with firmware updates etc.

3) Almost by definition because the hardware has to be optimized for specific functions there tend to be fewer options. Although on its face this is a disadvantage, in reality, its an advantage, as it provides less rope to hang yourself with, and fewer options for developers to test to actually make sure stuff is doing what it is supposed to.

Fairly rare that you hookup a piece of hardware and it simply doesn't do what its intended to… not so much with software. Although I have to say that with the ability to update hardware with firmware hardware makers are taking a much more "software" like approach.

My new sony OLED monitor has a "bug" when displaying 24p material that will apparently be addressed with a firmware update…
Ughh.

I would think a dedicated chip set would be the most overall time and quality efficient solution but not the most cost effective depending on the users needs. So all the issues I've read over the years about compressor messed this up or encore doesn't handle this well etc.... and the best way to go is an Alchemist or Teranex is because of the superior coding and overall software design and algorithms in those lines of products. Well it will be interesting to see what BMD does with the technology. The fact that Teranex is willing or have to be bought by BMD must mean they aren't doing as well as they have in the past. Is the market for their high end products shrinking? Is this another indication of the Race to the Bottom? More will be revealed.
