You did say that the problem system will edit to SRW-5500 IIRC. What if you manually configure the deck to the 5500 and try and control the digibeta? It may not be frame accurate but I think the video record strobe will still work given FCP7 had a generic setting for all Sony machines so the basic protocol must be very similar. Do you have another digibeta machine to try just to see if there is some slight format issue with the deck?
