[Avid-L2] Breaking 5 hour QT movies into 30 minute chunks?

On a show we are doing the surveillance camera footage was recorded to drives not tape.  The show recorded 3 camera feeds to file 24 hours per day for 2 or more weeks.  The point is there is 7TB of files and the QT movies are in approx 5 hour chunks.  I'm told that importing the 5 hour chunks tends to crash, not sure why but it does.  Perhaps there is a san issue but whatever the cause they have found 30 minute chunks are more reliable.  They are using QT Pro to create new self contained movies from the 5 hour files.  I'm not much of QT Pro user but rather than create new QT self contained 30 minute QT I believe they can create non self contained movies of the 30 minute chunks that would reference the 5 hour files.  Don't know if those would be technically QT refs but it would eliminate the need to in essence double the storage needs by creating new self contained files for the 30 minute chunks.  Given the volume of the footage involved I'm
trying to sus out if the non self contained 30 minute chunks would be reliable enough for our needs.  I have no reason to doubt that would work but I figure it's wise to ask the collective for any experience they might have.  And if your first thought is "Why the hell didn't they just shoot to tape?" join the club and take a number.
