I understand that Lion is a bit of a stinker on older MacBooks and even
more so if you upgrade so I suggest you clean install and move your user
data onto Lion from a Timemachine backup or whatnot.

I wasn't looking forward to going to Lion sooner than I wanted to.
Are there any issues with first installing MC6 on Snow Leopard and then
upgrading to Lion?
I have a feeling that the workflow would need to be uninstall MC6 >
install Lion > install MC6.
Is that necessary?
