Re: [Avid-L2] Re: MC 6 plug in compatibility?

Your input is valuable but I did say "If true . . . and I'd check" so don't panic! Marianna may recall the skewed deal I commented on in the past. There are certainly things in v6 that I value and I'll suggest an upgrade to all the systems at the university where I teach.

You may not know this but I am actually the person who sets the pricing for approvals at Avid. I can tell you that e-staff and I and many others went though painstaking detail to ensure that we were as fair as possible. With the 5.0 to 5.5 upgrade at $149 this was specifically done because we felt it was the fair price to charge for that release, this price was unprecedented at Avid for Media Composer but we felt it was the right thing to do at this time. With 6.0 we are trying to get back to a more standardized set and easy to understand set of prices so customers can make purchasing decisions for now and the future in simple

Other situations were considered too. I can assure you there is no malicious intent here. Competition in this space is fierce. We're out to make great products and have fair upgrade prices for all customers, but we are a business and businesses are in business to make money. I know you know this, of course. But you should also know that that V6 was literally 2 years in the making for some of the features. Literally every line of code was ported for 64 bit. That costs real money. For upgrade prices, we're talking literally low hundreds of dollars here. Now if you want to debate the macroeconomic principals of pricing in a very competitive landscape for software for creative people, then let's talk off line. I can assure you it's a mix of business savvy, science, and understanding how creative people perceive value for software. Not an easy mix to come up with, I assure you.

If not, then wait for a bit until the next version. One thing is for sure we'll have another version. We've proven we can deliver products for our customers. Marianna posted some pricing earlier and we're working on more communications about pricing. It takes a bit of time because we have to consider international pricing too when we post publically. After that, I'll leave it up to you guys to debate the pricing model as I won't comment on this again (I think:))
