I offer:

You didn't mention what platform or OS you're using. If it's a Mac,
you should be on OS 10.6.8 or higher for best performance with MC 5.5.3.
Also, did you use the Uninstaller located in your Applications Folder
to uninstall the previous version of MC? Are you logged in as the
Administrator? If so to any or all of the previous suggestions, did
you create new user settings? That almost always fixes new version
problems.
Based on the error, you may have a permissions problem, which leads
me to believe that the installation was done from a user login. I'll
bet that if you log in as the Admin, uninstall, then reinstall as
Admin, the system should work properly.
