Re: [Avid-L2] BMD Resolve on Avid DX Hardware

Oops, too fast hitting send, so here are the couple of things I'd like to clarify:

-I am not discounting the DX hardware. It's been solid all these years, perfectly integrated with the software and Avid made the effort to keep it current and add new features. Problem is something is not right if the company cuts the price by 70% after 3 years of service. No other manufacturer has done that so far, at least not to my knowledge. Kona was always priced around 3K and BMD around 1K. Even after this price cut, I still think DX boxes are overpriced. Time will tell.

-The edge DX has over third party HW is pretty thin and I believe mainly due to  Avid not having the time or will to adapt the features to different I/O cards. These are definitely capable of handling: dual stream SDI, 3D, ancillary data, LTC I/O and thin raster. They are also able to handle things that DX cannot touch: 2K/4K resolutions, as well as pure progressive formats. David Colantuoni mentioned that there are some efforts to adapt Universal Mastering to third party, no guarantee though.

-Let's not forget that most of the features listed by Job are available only with Nitris DX. Mojo DX is fairly crippled and does not offer: HW DNxHD codec, ancillary data and Universal Mastering. To my knowledge. So the thin edge is actually thinner.

-Last but not least, the original topic was about developing support for the Avid DX hardware so that it can be used by other apps, like Resolve. Which I still believe it's far fetched for a lot of reasons, both technical and financial.

Thes are all good points, however, I need to clarify a couple of things:

DX hardware still offers some bonuses.

The following are NOT supported with Open I/O:

    • Ancillary Data

    • LTC I/O (Timecode over RS-422 is supported)

    • Audio Punch-In

    • Full Frame Stereoscopic 3D Simultaneous Capture/Digital Cut

    • Hardware Codec Encode/Decode

    • Multiple I/O Hardware Support in CPU

    • Universal Mastering

    • Thin Raster Timeline Modes

And in the words of Shane Ross, the DX advantages are:

- HD-RGB capture through dual link

- DNxHD encoding (dual stream) Hardware encoding, built into the box

- AVC-Intra encoding (dual stream), hardware encoding, built into the box

- Both DNxHD and AVC-Intra encoders in the box at the same time

- Full frame stereoscopic (3D) capture/monitor/output

- Thin raster format support (meaning that it takes the burden of stretching out anamorphic footage to full screen off of the computer and shoulders the task itself)

- Dual live sync

- Always active analog and digital audio monitoring
