[Avid-L2] Re: AVID kept their promise. - Biscardi blog.

I couldn't afford Avid in the early 90's but remember being incredibly excited about the whole NLE revolution especially after cutting a 90minute special for PBS on a 3 machine BetaSP setup with an Ampex ACE25 edit controller and having to add 3 minutes into the middle edit by edit.

In 1994 I teamed up with a facility and bought a DVision system for £14,000 running on a 386 tower! Despite it's limitations and maximum 640 x 320 frame size it was great for off-lining and I cut many corporate videos on it.

In '95 I took some time out to go travelling and when i came back the buggers at the facility had bought two Avid's which must have been V6 and with AVBV hardware. I spent a lot of time asking the junior edit assistant how to get it to do things but was still impressed.

After a short diversion into Media 100 on a G3 I finally got the cash together to buy an Avid Xpress with a Meridien BOB and spent most of my time telling people that it wasn't really any different to MC despite the limitations! Finally got to buy a full MC when Adrenaline came out in 2003 through an Avid upgrade deal and spent most of my time telling people that V1.0 wasn't as bad as everyone was saying - although it was! Always managed to avoid FCP even though it sits on my Macbook Pro as I write this.

Almost 20 years on from when I first got heated under the collar by Non Linear editing, I still am! the new Version 6 and the possibilities of 64bit is getting me excited again.
