I offer:
One of Edison's main film-related patents was his invention of square
sprocket holes. Nobody could make a film without them, though many
tried various methods of moving film through their machinery.
Edison's sprocket holes became the standard while all other methods of
film transport failed. This was purely due to his marketing success
as other methods were just as capable.
