I did a follow through workflow today and here is the complete process.
1. AMA the QuickTime files to "Original AMA" bin from "AMA_SourceFiles"
volume.
2. Select AMA Clips and Transcode to DNx36 then moved to "Transcoded From
AMA" bin
3. Closed the "Original AMA" bin, quit the Avid and restart the computer (
Simulated duration of offline process )
4. Created a Sequence from the DNx36 clip then simulated some Cuts, Edits &
CC.
5. Copied the DNx36 Sequence to the "Original AMA" bin. ( Without loading
the sequence ) and closed the "Transcoded From AMA" bin
6. Select the DNx36 Sequence and Relink to AMA_SourceFiles with Enable AMA
relinking ( Create New Sequence, this will created a ******.Relink.01
sequence )
7. Now, you have a sequence with AMA clips that can be Transcode to
finishing resolution ( DNx175 )
8. Output.
Note: Original AMA Bin needs to be present during conform phase to create
the relational link between the AMA Clips and the location(s) of the AMA
files.
Hope this helps.

So here's a quick question (I do work with AMA and XDCAM a lot and avoid
these by transcoding early to DNX HD res (220 or 220X, but you can't always
do that, and in the interest of being prepared...) when you say you add the
same tape number to the AMA clips - where? To the volume folder? To each
individual clip? Where are you adding the tape # so it will relink?

The way i would do it would be to follow Oliver's advice regarding the QT. With
the XDCAM EX, open your AMA bins and transcode to your offline resolution. Add
a tape number to the offline res clips that relates to the card that the footage
was shot on so that you can track it back at conform - date, camera number and
roll number works well. Then when ready to online put your sequence in a bin on
its own, show reference clips to reveal the clips in the sequence and their
unique tape numbers then mount the volumes you need. Now add the same tape
number to the AMA clips and relink the sequence. HTH

recently worked on a project where I had great difficulty getting the finished
sequence to link to the media so it could be transcoded for online. I had to
manually open each AMA volume and relink the original bin containing all the
file based media master clips. Then I was able to relink the sequence. I also
had to manually modify the Canon DSLR clips to enter timecode which was lost in
Symphony 5.5. The programme was offlined on a Media Composer 5.0.
