So I have built a DB 9pin cable to Avid spec from the previous post on the thread. I did try the cross patch suggestion with two mac mcsoft 3.x systems and could not get it to work. This seems obvious but the avid vtr emulation cable goes on the RS-422 side not the RS-232 side if you are on a PC right? The 422 patch bay trick would indicate the 422 side is where the cable goes. I also tried controling a system from a DVW-500 with no success with the patch bay cross over trick. The avid doc talks about the remote play and remote capture are like a vtr in local or remote and that it starts off in local. I don't understand this statement. Remote capture allows the avid to work like a record vtr and be controlled to edit where the controller tells it to. Remote play allows a sequence in the record monitor to cue, stop and play controlled by an edit controller. Both of these operations would require a vtr to be in remote not local. When does it act like a vtr in local. There is also remote punch in for remotely controlled audio punch ins and that would also be a vtr in remote so I am confused. The one thing I didn't do was remove all the deck configuration channels and the result was the keyspan port 2 was greyed out so I chose port 1 and physically moved the din to 9 pin cable to port 1 on the keyspan. I tried controlling one avid from another and also from our DVW-500 without success today I'm going to try again with my home made cable to see if that helps.

So you're saying that works? If so I'm hard pressed to see how the ABC folks couldn't make a cable to do the same. I know first hand many of those guys are top notch techs. All it would take is an ohm meter to verify the pins on the Avid cable. Greg I'll solder one up early next week and if it works you owe me an OKI dog. Of course I'm not sure what the protools control element might do. Do you have a 422 patch at Secret HQ that would allow for this patch bay trick?

If you want to donate to Red Cross quake relief, you can do so through your cell phone. Text redcross to 90999 to make a $10 donation. It will be on your next cell bill.
