A shot in the dark:
I'm pretty sure that MC doesn't like it when the computer HD goes to sleep (screen is OK).
If your system goes to sleep while you're away, possibly that's what is causing it.
Set your System Prefs > Energy Saver so that Computer Sleep is "never" and see if that helps.
